Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Plastika Ke Karlovu 8a
[edit]Ahoj, zrušil jsem kategorii neidentifikovaných soch u téhle plastiky a až zpětně si všiml, že tam ta kategorie nebyla zapomenutá omylem. Socha mi nepřišla neidentifikovaná co do lokality, ale hádám, že Tobě jde asi o neidentifikaci osoby autora. Tak jen hlásím, co jsem provedl, kdyžtak to zvaž a revertuj. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]][[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Як і в попередні роки, долучитися до змагання можуть усі охочі — як професійні фотографи, так і аматори. Головне, щоб ви любили Землю і розділяли ідею конкурсу — представити природно-заповідні території України за допомогою світлин під вільними ліцензіями. У Вікіпедії та Вікісховищі конкурсні фото будуть доступні тисячам людей.
Загальний формат конкурсу такий же, як у минулі роки. Стежте за новинами проєкту у Facebook, Instagram або в блозі. Також ключова інформація буде з'являтися на сторінці у Вікісховищі.
Важливо! З міркувань національної безпеки та безпеки учасників і учасниць до участі у конкурсі допускаються тільки фото та відео, зроблені до 23 лютого 2022 року включно!

How do I request deletion directly?
[edit]Hi Juandev, how do I request deletion directly? Many of my files were once deleted with no deletion discussion, and I believe none would have been deleted if there would have been a discussion. In the end I requested undeletion so I can add the relevant licenses, some also already had licenses. I don't believe an admin would have deleted them if there would have been a discussion. Also, some admin believed a file is not copyrightable even though it was taken from within an interior space. Maybe also a bit for such experiences I believe that having a discussion before deletion is better. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 09:36, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Well, I would take to the discussion, just files which are in question. While for the cases of license violation I would use the link, which is in Tools section below Wikimedia Commons logo titled "Report copyright violation". Covid-Monument Madrid
[edit]Hello Juandev, you created Category:Eternal fire for the victims of COVID which is in principle the same as Category:Monument to the victims of the Coronavirus, Madrid. There has been a refurbishment, but it is obviously the same monument. I suggest moving your picture to the second category, which is older and has a Wikidata item. Важливо! Цього року з міркувань безпеки до участі у фотоконкурсі приймаються лише фото, зроблені до 31 березня 2024 року (включно) для звичайних фото та до 23 лютого 2022 року (включно) для знімків з дронів та інших літальних пристроїв.

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

З 1 лютого по 31 березня 2025 року завантажуйте світлини, відео та аудіо нематеріальної культурної спадщини у Вікісховище та долучайтеся до її популяризації.
«Вікі любить фольклор» — це міжнародний конкурс, метою якого є документування народних традицій, вбрання, танців, співів, святкувань та обрядів, щоб наповнити Вікіпедію якісними зображеннями для ілюстрування статей. Щоб взяти участь, перейдіть на сторінку «Вікі любить фольклор».
Три найкращі світлини отримають цінні призи та сувеніри на українському етапі конкурсу. Три учасники чи учасниці, які своїми фото проілюструють найбільше статей Вікіпедії та інших вікіпроєктів, також отримають призи в українській частині конкурсу. Всі фото, відео та аудіо будуть брати участь у міжнародному змаганні.

10 лютого розпочався Місячник ілюстрування української природи у 2025 році!
Він триватиме до 10 березня 2025 року та організовується громадською організацією «Вікімедіа Україна».
Місячник ілюстрування української природи — це проєкт, присвячений ілюструванню української Вікіпедії та Вікіданих світлинами, завантаженими за десять років проведення української частини міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить Землю».
З 2013 року у межах цього конкурсу учасники та учасниці завантажили на Вікісховище понад 125 тисяч світлин пам’яток природи України. Багато з них ще не знайшли свого місця на відповідних сторінках Вікіпедії. Відповідно, у цій кампанії беруть участь лише фотографії з української частини фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить Землю».
Долучитися можуть усі зареєстровані користувачі та користувачки Вікіпедії. Для цього:
- проілюструйте принаймні одну статтю української Вікіпедії чи один елемент Вікіданих фотографією з конкурсу «Вікі любить Землю»;
- додайте себе у розділ «Учасники та внесок» на сторінці проєкту;
- регулярно додавайте свій внесок у той розділ згідно із системою балів.
За результатами кампанії 5 найактивніших учасників та учасниць конкурсу отримають цінні призи від організаторів — сертифікати інтернет-магазинів. Усі учасники й учасниці також зможуть отримати офіційний сертифікат участі від «Вікімедіа Україна», а також сувеніри із символікою Вікіпедії та «Вікі любить Землю».

AI-supported category discovery idea
[edit]Regarding your idea at Commons:Village pump/Technical/Archive/2025/08#AI supporting category discovery?, I think it's an interesting idea. There is WikiChat but it hasn't been trained on Commons and maybe it would make sense to propose for it to also be trained on Commons meta pages and categories similar to what's proposed in this issue: https://github.com/stanford-oval/WikiChat/issues/54. Moreover, that AI is not integrated into Wikipedia or Commons so people can't find and use it from there. I think you could propose this at the Community Wishlist on meta: m:Community Wishlist/Wishes, maybe along with further ideas of how this could be implemented and useful and maybe also for Wikipedia and not just for categories. Привіт!
З 1 по 31 жовтня (за київським часом) запрошуємо до участі в українській частині міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки», метою якого є фотографування пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України. Долучатися можуть усі охочі — як професійні фотографи, так і початківці. Журі визначить найкраще фото кожного регіону України, а 10 найкращих знімків пам’яток з усіх поданих будуть представляти Україну та її культурну спадщину на міжнародному етапі «Wiki Loves Monuments». Зі списками пам'яток можна ознайомитися тут.
Окрім основних номінацій, цього року у конкурсі є десять спеціальних номінацій та відзнак:

Jak se dají hromadně měnit popisky a názvy souborů? Mám fotky ze stejného dne a ze stejné akce, a nechce se mi ke každému souboru otrocky dopisovat ručně doplnění k výchozímu souboru, a ručně kopírovat popisek.
Ale když označím zeleně všechny soubory (počítám, že ty zelené zaškrtávací obdélníky vlevo od náhledu značí, že soubor je označen), a zvolím "Ctrl+E", dostanu jen chybovou hlášku:
A sice "Nástroje > Nastavení" mi zobrazí okno:
Ale ani to neumožní - když nastavení uložím- aby se mi takto definovaný popisek propsal do popisků souborů v náhledu.
Co s tím?
