Location tag removal?

@Rkieferbaum: Yes, I removed them because the location in the EXIF data itself is inaccurate. For the provided example I experimented with Canon's "Camera Connect" App back at the time that allows to save eg. saving location data even when the camera itself does not have a GPS module. What I didn't know at the time was that it causes some (accuracy, but also other) issues when the camera itself goes into standby. If I knew that problem before uploading it, I would have removed the location data from the EXIF info. I did not upload a new version of the image as I don't think that a slightly incorrect location data justifies the extra work and a 20MB upload. I suggested a Tool to edit Metadata, but unfortunately this never went anywhere.

I usually only include the object location data as I think it doesn't matter (eg. if I'm close by and having two location data entries would add nothing more than having two spots a few meters apart on a map). If I see a certain value in including the camera location (eg. if it's far away from the actual object) I include the camera location data on the image description page (see here and here as examples). I hope this clarifies the situation.

Thanks for your reply! Yes, embedded GPS data often has accuracy problems. I'd like to point out, though, that {{Object location}} is no substitute for {{Location}} and they don't usually, if ever, show up on the same map. On the contrary, having both, even if very close to each other, can be very useful (for instance, if you're looking for closeup images of a building or monument, you can explicity search for photos where location is fewer than X meters from object location).

From a practical standpoint, too, we're working to try to get all photos on Commons in either one of these groups: Category:Location not applicable (location doesn't apply, i.e., logos, generic objects, etc), {{GPS EXIF}} (the image is not yet tagged but has EXIF location); {{GPS EXIF ambiguous}} (not yet tagged but EXIF location is not accurate); or {{Location}} (properly geotagged image). If an image has valid location in EXIF, but it's wrong, and it has no location tag, then there's no way for us to know that the location is wrong and we'll keep adding GPS EXIF tags back. So, to sum up, ideally we'd have location tags on your photos just the same, even if they're close to object location, or at least the ambiguous tag so that we know not to trust EXIF data. @Rkieferbaum: I never thought that object X within a radius of Y meters could be an interesting thing to look up, but on the other hand: why shouldn't it be?

I rechecked the images and added {{GPS EXIF ambiguous}} to those where the EXIF info is not correct. For the images where the location data was correct I reverted my edit to include the camera location data again. If there ever is a tool to edit metadata (which there probably never will be) I will more than likely just remove the location data as I will not know any of the locations in 30+ years when the tool is maybe ready.

Thinking about this I probably will not be able to add any location data if it is not recorded in camera. As I have currently very little time for photo editing, my images pile up or are may be put aside for years until they are processed (eg. this one took about three years to get processed). If I wasn't in a very specific location, I will not remember where I was. Unlike the object (which often can be seen on satellite images) the position where I took the image can of course not be seen on maps. Additionally I usually don't have much time left to hunt for the location where I maybe was at that time as the image editing takes quite some time as is.

There are of course images where any location data makes no sense (eg. this one). As far as I understood this, they should be tagged with {{GPS EXIF ambiguous}}, right?

Another case where I don't think a location data would do any good (even probably possible) are indoor shots. This image for example could have location information. On the other hand this would be a very inaccurate position (especially in larger buildings where you may not know exactly where you are). Guessing the location would be probably as good as assigning a location data with a random number generator and giving it a certain area.

EDIT: This image would be another example as object and camera location would be practically identical (no even a meter apart) - I would thereby probably just use the same location data as I couldn't even differentiate them on the map. Here is the same question again: What use is there if the location and camera data is actually identical?

Additionally, I want to point your attention to File:ISS046-E-44546 - View of Earth.jpg as example. This image has location data, but a) the use of this is questionable IMO and b) I don't think the location data is correct. I know the area quite well and I can't think of any area where this image would fit. Maybe it's the different point of view which I wouldn't expect or that I misinterpret some details as something they are not. Another example would be File:Alberner Hafen 76A.jpg which had incorrect location data on it. What is the use of the location data here if it's off by ~20km? My point here is that even location data would be interesting on many images, it shouldn't be it's own sake as wrong location data is in my opinion worse than no location data if the file is categorised correctly. My point on this is that if you add location data, it should be as correct as humanly possible. Of course, mistakes can happen, but I do not want to include should be about in this area data.

I have uploaded a edit here that took about ~10 minutes to fix. ... And don't think I'm against images of medals - thank you, I don't think that you're against medals :) In this case, I worked on the shooting conditions (photos.app.goo.gl/bYo1DCGE5x3xp69m6, lol) for a couple of weeks and was hoping for some feedback — thank you again! I’m very impressed with how it turned out. I can promise I won’t bring this to QI, but perhaps you could take a look at the photos of the medals in that category and help with them, since you know how to do that? @Lvova: Well, you have to start somehow and somewhere. A good light that does not cause additional shadows is very important. If you have (I assume this) a ring light with a camera in the middle, it's a very good start as the object will be lit from the point of view (which would be good to avoid unwanted shadows). As additional tip: I use a transparent background (eg. sanded acrylic glas or glass) to not only have the option to add some light from below, but also that there is no ground that could catch shadows. With shiny surfaces (like glass) you have to be careful to not cause any additional reflections (beside glass breaking under your object of course). This not only helps with shadows but also makes cutting the object out much easier. I always cut out the object so I do not have to bother with ensuring a pure white background while shooting.

Other than editing the images myself, I'd rather tell you how I processed the image so that you can improve your images in the future. For image editing I use RawTherapee which can be used on both RAW as JPG files and is available for Linux, MacOS and Windows. Your images had an incorrect white balance (information what value is supposed to be the colour white) and therefore your background turned blue. Because your white in the image was off, every other colour was off as well. You can read how to correct the white balance in RawTherapee here. (In short: As described under "Pick" you use the Pick button and click on the part that should be white (or grey)). Even it seems like you have taken the images with a smartphone it seems very strange that the white balance is off that much.

If you want to dive deeper there are a lot of good videos on YouTube. I eg. have learned a lot from Andy Astbury. Even though he tends to talk a lot and thereby produces rather long videos that do not suite 'quick information', he explains why he wants to change certain parts of the image and how he does so (in the end photography is an art form and every person has to find their own style, so there is no clear right or wrong).

When the image is processed in RawTherapee, I cut out the object with GIMP. The 10 minute fix on the image shows quite well if you have a closer look as the process of cutting out can take quite some time and I saved some time here which has a visible effect on the end result.

@Lvova: fishing not fish - exactly. There is neither a use for me or you if I know who you can improve your images, but you can not. Additionally I have rather limited time at the moment (not speaking of the huuuge backlog that just get's bigger and bigger). Eg. Ringturm - Verhüllung 2022 PNr°1170.jpg took about three years from shot to upload and National socialist judiciary victims memorial on the cemetery Vösendorf, Lower Austria, Austria-full PNr°1179.jpg I planned to shoot for like four months, but never really had the time to do so.

I hope that I'll have some more time next weekend to may upload a video to a streaming service to show you how you can improve the image.
